There’s something so exciting about photographing expecting parents as they prepare to welcome their little one into the world. Recently, I had the incredible honor of capturing Jenny’s studio maternity photos in Los Angeles, California, and honestly, I’m still glowing from the experience. As your local Los Angeles photographer, I wanted to share this beautiful session with you and give you all the insider details about what makes a maternity photoshoot special and 100% worth the splurge.

Living and working as a photographer in Los Angeles, I’ve had the privilege of shooting many maternity sessions over my years. However, there’s something uniquely intimate and timeless about a studio maternity session that just can’t be replicated outdoors. When Jenny reached out about booking her maternity session, we talked about her vision. Something unique, dreamy, and focused entirely on celebrating this incredible chapter of her and her partner’s journey.
The controlled environment of a Los Angeles studio allowed us to create exactly the mood she was envisioning. With perfect lighting, no distractions from passersby (because let’s be real, LA can be chaotic), and the freedom to take our time creating images that felt authentic and beautiful.

As a Los Angeles-based queer non-binary photographer, I bring a unique perspective to maternity sessions that celebrates all kinds of families and love stories. Every session is different because every person’s journey to parenthood is different. Some clients are first-time parents, buzzing with excitement, while others are adding to their growing family. Some have traveled long, difficult roads to get to this moment. It’s important to me as a Los Angeles Photographer that I honor all of these experiences with the same level of care and artistry.
For Jenny’s session, we focused on creating images that felt both classic and contemporary. Los Angeles has this incredible energy that I try to infuse into my work. It’s glamorous but also laid-back, polished but authentic. We created eclectic, ethereal imagery that captured not just how Jenny looked, but how she felt during this time in her life.
The true beauty of having maternity photos taken in the studio is that we’re not limited by weather, traffic, or time of day. We can take our time, experiment with different poses and lighting, and focus on creating artwork that you’ll treasure forever.

If Jenny’s session has you thinking about booking your own maternity shoot, here’s everything you need to know to prepare:
The sweet spot for maternity sessions is typically between 28-36 weeks pregnant. You want to have a beautiful, prominent bump without being so close to your due date that you’re uncomfortable.
One of the most important things for your maternity session is to choose the perfect Los Angeles studio. If you plan on having a Los Angeles studio maternity session, you want to make sure that your studio ideally has plenty of natural light. However, if not, using external studio lights is always an option that gives you a more editorial-type feel to your maternity photos. Below are some links to some unique and perfect Los Angeles studios for your maternity session!

Flowing Fabrics: Chiffon, silk, and jersey materials photograph beautifully and move gracefully with your body. They’re also comfortable, which is crucial during your pregnancy.
Form-Fitting Options: Don’t be afraid of bodycon dresses or fitted tops that show off your bump. This is the time to celebrate your silhouette!
Layers and Textures: Cardigans, kimonos, and wraps add visual interest and can be removed throughout the session for different looks. Play around and have fun with it!
Neutral and Earthy Tones: Creams, blush pinks, soft grays, and warm browns photograph beautifully in studio settings and have a timeless quality.
Comfort is Key!: Make sure to bring comfortable shoes (or plan to go barefoot) and avoid anything too tight or restrictive.
Many maternity clients choose to have professional hair and makeup done, and I absolutely support that if it makes you feel more confident. However, it’s not required. Speaking honestly, some of my most beautiful sessions have been with clients who did their own makeup and wore their hair naturally. At the end of the day, do whatever makes you feel the most beautiful and sexy! It’s all about YOU!!!
You will find that, oftentimes, maternity clients will include their partners! There’s something beautiful about capturing that anticipation and excitement together. If you feel comfortable including your partner, it’s a great way to cherish this special time with you two together. It’s the perfect opportunity for us to do a mix of solo shots and couples poses. Creating a complete story of this unique time in both of your lives.

Professional maternity photography is an investment in preserving one of the most transformative times in your life. These images become family heirlooms and something you’ll look back on years later with your child, remembering this special time of anticipation and preparation.
As a Los Angeles maternity photographer, I understand that you have many options for photographers in this city. What I offer is not just technical expertise, but a genuine passion for celebrating all kinds of families and love stories. My goal is to create images that feel authentically you, whether you’re having your first baby or your fifth.
If you’re expecting and considering a maternity session, I’d love to chat about creating something beautiful together. Every pregnancy is unique, and every session should reflect that individuality. Whether you envision something more eclectic and unique like Jenny’s session, or something completely different that speaks to your personality, we can make it happen.
The weeks and months of pregnancy fly by faster than you expect. Don’t let this magical time pass without documenting it!
